Two Separate Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Vessels Declared Unaccounted For subsequent to Departing Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery effort is presently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a duo of missing boats loaded with relief goods journeying from Mexico to Cuba.
Military Search Missions Initiated
Mexico has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than nine total crew members, according to a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the navy said.
Context of Aid to the Island
Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country endures widespread nationwide blackouts.
"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are outfitted with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy said.
The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their consular staff.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Earlier Humanitarian Mission
Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had delivered 14 tons of relief supplies to the country.
That vessel, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and food.
Broader Geopolitical Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation came into effect.
The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with over 50k operations cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Political pressure have intensified lately, with remarks from different representatives highlighting the delicate situation regarding relations.
Reacting to recent comments, a prominent official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to locate the sailboats and ensure the safety of the people on board.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
