The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
