The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
