No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
