New York's next mayor states his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"This decision was based on the security of my family and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.
With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.
The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
