New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
