Massive Upheaval Forecasted: Britain's Direst Climate Crisis Scenarios Laid Bare by Researchers
The most severe projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by experts, encompassing a searing 4C rise in average temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea levels. An alternative projection foresees a plunge of 6C in temperature following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and power requirements.
Possible Extremes, Not Predictions
These effects, certain ones are associated with critical climate thresholds, are seen as improbable but plausible. The team explained that these models filled a gap in forecasting that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.
"The severe weather events we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are possible," said Nigel Arnell who directed the analysis. "The nation has been formulating policy lacking the tools to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now given planners what they need to prepare for environmental results they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Suite of Harsh Climate Possibilities
A further series of severe models maps the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that temperatures could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be triple typical amounts.
The probability of the worst-case outcomes occurring cannot be precisely determined due to unknown factors about what steps will be taken to address climate change and how the Earth's systems will react. This analysis was compared to national security risk assessments or stress tests for economic stability.
Critical Possibility Elements
- Severe Heating: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if emissions cuts fails or if strong feedback loops including the Amazon basin dying release its huge repository of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heatwaves and dry spells plaguing the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and becoming unstable due to global heating. A full shutdown commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and water resources would be drastically changed," noted the professor.
- Rapid Sea Level Rise: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if polar ice in the polar regions collapse rapidly, flooding coastal cities and towns. In contrast to the other scenarios, this risk is already recognized by coastal engineers.
- Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from fossil fuel combustion reflect solar radiation from reaching the ground.
Planning for the Worst
These dire projections could be utilized in planning the building of long-term infrastructure, including new towns, power generation facilities and urban drainage systems. Knowledge about these environmental threats could also speed the drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The study developed the extreme models using a blend of past data and records, digital projections and climate physics. The scenarios do not take into account potential global problems including the global food shortages and increased conflict.
This work was requested as part of a official risk assessment framework. Independent analyses have warned that not enough attention was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.
The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the threats for 4C. Previous adaptation plans have been labeled being "inadequate" by some observers.
