Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
