Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.

"Returning to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites

It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a small cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the series creator.

"I remember the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every October 31st."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fans

Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.

"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Abound

While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange communal situation. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by classic horror movies, also is on the table.

Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
