Coordinated British-French Air Strike Strikes Daesh Munitions Store in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."
In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
