Condemnation Surges as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Criticism
Personalities from across the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,â said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the remarks. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didnât support him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some GOP elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his party to justify the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, thereâs a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of another political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
