Arteta Praises ‘More Reliable’ Squad and Reveals Kai Havertz Setback.
The Gunners' boss feels assured that his squad can persist in handling with player absences after confirming that star striker Kai Havertz will not return for the coming weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for German Star
Havertz has been sidelined since August after undergoing an operation on his knee. Hoped to return sooner, the manager stated the player hit a snag when increasing his recovery and could not progress “the required stage.”
“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.
Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture
This news creates a selection headache for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored playing out of position against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also an option following a lengthy absence.
Defensive Concerns Remain
Additional concerns involve defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Chelsea match. Consequently, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to keep their places in the backline for the table-toppers.
Arteta feels the substantial investment on reinforcements during the summer has resulted in a more robust situation to handle such unavailability.
Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge
Questioned if more options was benefiting their title quest, the manager agreed. “Indeed, as this campaign has seen more issues in the attacking line, and now the problems with the defence,” he noted.
“History has shown us that we must deploy players in alternative spots, and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at the top. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Havertz
Commenting on the delay highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He could not go to the next level and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”
The manager conveyed his personal desire to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, personally, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his personality. I see him suffer being outside.”
“His availability record is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I look forward to have him back with the squad playing because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
